When a door closes...

“When one door closes, another door opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the ones which open for us.”

– Alexander Graham Bell –

My daughter has been interning at the LS Ranch in Porterville, California for the better part of a year. She’s been studying Parelli Natural Horsemanship. (Think horse whisperer) She returned home on Mother’s Day and 3 days later, left for a second interview with Heartland Girls Ranch in Minnesota!

We are each at the bookends of our careers. Thrilled with the opportunities that await us, and yet, while talking with her on the phone the other day - she made a statement that I had just made to Michael the other day …

“I’m a little nervous. I’m excited. I don’t know what lies ahead of me, but I’m excited to get there.”

Most people are too attached to the past, to what they are familiar with, and therefore, miss opportunities that are right in front of them. When this happens we find ourselves focused on the loss that we feel – the closed door. What we see is only a closed door filled with frustration and unhappiness.

Often, just to the side of the closed door, awaits an opened one. Acknowledging its presence, walking toward it and then eventually walking through it are the next sequential steps. There is no timeline, but that door awaits you for when you are ready.

I’m a walker. I like hiking and walking. It’s my own form of Grounding, I suppose. I’ve written about this in the past, but a natural and effective way for me to enhance cognitive function is also one of the most promising practices I conduct; it’s called grounding, or as my father-in-law likes to call it: Earthing

My whole body responds to the action of walking. All my senses become alive! When I walk, I give my body and mind the opportunity to listen to the Earth, to listen to my Body and finally to listen to my Mind. My heart then tells me the rest. I’ll know what to do next.

What helps your body, mind and spirit?
