Experiences, Not Things

My favorite 5th-grade teacher used to always say, “If you want to create a memory, put words or song to movement”

This has been true for everything in my life.

I like to move through a problem. I planned each portion of my wedding on a walk. I wouldn’t return until I had figured it out completely. I began to rely on this technique. “Have a problem? Go on a walk!” For me, it worked 100% of the time! (swear to God!)

Between chemo and radiation treatments for breast cancer I would practice, practice, practice yoga on my yoga mat in class. I would “present a problem to the mat” I’d tell my husband and then, whatever the problem that presented itself for that day, got figured out! (Girl Scout’s Honor!)

It got to the point when I presented more challenging problems (don’t get me wrong, health and wellness were high on the list) but I think I became a little intrigued with this technique. We defied logic during my 12-months of treatments and surgeries and actually signed paperwork for a home loan DURING infusion; pen in one hand - tubes hooked up to an I.V. bag in the other. “Well… we don’t want to miss any opportunities” I explained to my brother who advised us, “Don’t make any major decisions while going through treatments”. We wanted to buy a house with a bedroom that had a Wall of Windows; I wanted to still be able to see the world. I continued my practice between infusions. I visualized wellness and a house with a bedroom that had a wall of windows. Four months later, and with the help of our friend Sarah Macdonald Ramsay, we found and purchased our home complete with a bedroom with a perfect wall of windows!

Now, I realize I have just used two examples of experiences that led to purchases of things, but I want to impress upon you the journey of the experience that led to its desired end. More important than things, it's the experiences that leave the greater impression.

The truth is, there is really no “end”; it’s always about the journey.

During the next 6-months I will be inviting you to practice setting intentions toward enhancing your life in ways that offer a desire toward peace, harmony and joy.

Looking forward to practicing with you!

To that end, this year, instead of giving gifts for the holidays, might I suggest giving experiences to those you love.

Here are a few experiences that I will be offering that will surly facilitate joy, peace, and wellbeing in body, mind and spirit.
