WHAT IS LAGREE FITNESS?

“The Lagree Method,” a high-intensity, low-impact exercise method, tightens, strengthens, and tones in as little as 20-minutes a session by incorporating bodybuilding principles, such as Time Under Tension, which removes breaks from workouts and grants users the ability to sweat, shake, and persevere through the total duration of every class. In addition, many Lagree movements incorporate the use of 600 muscles at once, making this method even more time-efficient for those on the go and those looking for quick but lasting results.

But I like to call it, “GET TO THE POINT!” exercise.

On the cusp of age 62, I wanted to find something that would help me cease my body deterioration. (Meaning, I would like to have the next 30 years of my life be as mobile as possible.) The National Institute of Health states, “Muscle mass decreases approximately 3–8% per decade after the age of 30 and this rate of decline is even higher after the age of 60. This involuntary loss of muscle mass, strength, and function is a fundamental cause of and contributor to disability in older people. (Curr Opin Clin Nutr Metab Care. PMC 2010 Jan 12.)

Well … THAT doesn’t sound very nice

Without sounding solely physical body oriented, it’s important for me to communicate some of my other motivating factors:

  • If our kids decide to have children and then conceive on a similar time frame as Michael and I, we’ll be 80 when the possibility of a baby is conceived!

oh geez!

  • I’ve brought in an income since I was 12 years old. I didn’t see Europe until I was 58 years old and I would like to join my husband on as many work-free  adventures as possible. (I’m currently researching an Ireland 150 miles Camino followed by a Yoga Retreat with Kim Dastrup and Katie Schiffgan.)

Ok, Shhhh…

Michael may not yet know about the yoga part yet!

  • Pain isn’t an enjoyable experience; I tend to have a psoas muscle who tries to dominate my life; I now have trouble throwing a baseball (so sad); and when I start to wear my trapezius muscles as earrings, I know my tension and stress is TOO MUCH! Michael calls this portion of our lives, ‘The Organ Recital” - pointing to our various body parts with whiny overtones:

“This organ” and then “That organ”

My co-teacher and friend, Elizabeth Wilson introduced me to Sami and her lovely mother, Lynda Smith. Sami offers a “1st class FREE” option and when I took it, I knew this was precisely what I was seeking: Building strength without weight lifting (and completion within a 45 min period)

HUGE PERK!

Sami and her mom, Lynda

(a fellow sexagenarian)

  1. I get my cardio up to 140-150 BPM.

  2. I’ve been reintroduced to my Gluteal muscles in ways I never thought I could imagine. (They are slowly coming around to appear round again.)

  3. My arms (triceps, biceps, and shoulder girdle) are stabilizing and getting stronger and stronger each week.

  4. Core. This is one of the biggest perks of all! No more back trouble!

So, What does this look like?

HERE is a 10-min abdominal demonstration

It’s not a torture device

(But there may be days when it briefly feels like one!)

There is a balance that we need to take when we exercise. Within our  outer shell, lives our inner self that is seeking that same balance. Balancing our inner and outer experience can be the gift of meaningfully moving our bodies. That is where the joy lives.

It’s like The Camino—since nobody can be 100% sure of what they will encounter over the next hill along the journey of life, any bit of preparation in body, mind, and spirit will almost certainly come in very useful down the road.

And I think it’s just as if not more important to remember that despite preparations for an unknown future, we must all practice being in and practice finding joy in the present moment. It’s easy to forget that the path of life isn’t over the next horizon but the ground that my feet are stepping on at this exact moment.

I believe that it’s precisely for that reason that I’m really happy to be practicing this “get to the point” exercise of Legree. I’m enjoying the challenge, I love my instructors, and I know it’s helping me stay healthy at the moment as well as preparing me to enjoy my next 30 years.

Plus, a nice butt is a fantastic perk.

May we all learn to celebrate the journey we are on at this moment of the journey of life.
